Latest News March 6th 2008: Great statement by Larry Scott, WTA tour CEO following Monica's retirement: “Monica Seles is one of the great champions in the history of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and an inspiration and role model for millions of fans throughout the world. No one will ever forget the fierce determination and will to win that Monica brought to the court, nor the caring and warm person that she has always been off the court. Fans of women’s tennis have no shortage of fond Monica memories and of amazing matches and rivalries that Monica was a part of. No doubt, Monica will soon find her rightful place at the International Tennis Hall of Fame for her many accomplishments on the tennis court.” February 14th 2008: Monica confirmed she would not be able to return to action. "Tennis has been and will always be a huge part of my life," said Seles in a statement. "I have for some time considered a return to professional play, but I have now decided not to pursue that." October 15th 2007: Monica will also be playing in an exhibition with Jennifer Capriati among others on December 8th inaugural Bank of the West Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic, Dec. 8, at The Riviera Tennis Club September 30th 2007: Monica is supposed to play an exhibition match this weekend against Corina Morariu, should be a good test... September 21st 2007: Some encouraging comments for Monica fans...Sports Illustrated writer Jon Wertheim..."a comeback is obviously a much longer shot, particularly given her age. But then again ... she never retired. She hits regularly with Nicole Vaidisova. My moles on the bayou tell me she looked sharp beating Navratilova in a New Orleans exhibition recently" February 15th 2007: Monica will be playing a new exhibition on April 2nd as she'll face Martina Navratilova at the River Oaks Country Club. November 17th 2006: No news really about Monica's tennis career, but she was in Africa a few days ago, read about it here. August 15th 2006: In a recent interview, Monica gave some light about her foot: "My foot is not looking too good, to put it simply. Reality’s coming in there. But I’ve been trying really hard in the last few years. It’s not as if, I guess, when you’re 20 or so for your body. In the next few weeks or a month, I’m going to decide one way or the other. But it doesn’t look too good." December 21st 2004: Monica will be playing two exhibition matches in February against Martina Navratilova in New Zealand which should test her condition, if things go well, she could return to the tour... |
