Martina was born September 30th, 1980 in Kosice, Slovakia. She was named Martina in tribute to Martina Navratilova. Her mother Melanie who was some time ago a professionnal tennis player has trained Martina since she started playing at a very young age. Very young, Martina was very dominant and reached the #1 status in juniors in her early teen years. She was even the youngest #1 player in WTA history reaching that position at 14 years old. Martina was extremly dominant in her first years even winning 3 grand slams in a single year. Most of her success came at the Australian Open where she won 3 straight singles and doubles titles. The most incredible part is that the doubles title was earned with 3 different partners..But since her 1998 title at the Australian Open, things have been much tougher for Martina has yet to win a singles grand slam title since even though she has kept her #1 spot for most of the time... Problems have came mostly against more dominant and powerful opponents such as the Williams sisters and Lindsay Davenport.... Lately, Martina has chosen to not represent her country Switzerland in international competitions such as Federation Cup events and the Olympics. Rumors have been whispering that her two permanent residences are now in Slovakia and in Florida, USA. |
