June 15th 2008: As scheduled, Martina was in action this weekend in the Liverpool exhibition, she won her match against Jana Novotna 6-3, 6-4, well done:) April 5th 2008: Well it looks like Martina will be facing Jana Novotna in the exhibition match in Liverpool, read about it here. March 4th 2008: Some news as Martina confirmed she would be playing in an exhibition event in Liverpool from June 13-15! “She wants to give something back to the game,” tournament director Anders Borg told The Associated Press. “Her life goes on and she wants to be part of the exhibition circuit.” January 4th 2008: The news was finally confirmed, Martina was suspended for 2 years because of a positive cocaine test done at last year's Wimbledon...she will not appeal..."Since Martina has retired from competitive sports, it makes no sense for her to challenge the judgment," manager Mario Widmer said in Switzerland. "She just isn't going to play anymore." November 25th 2007: It's not much of an update but Martina has asked the WTA to assist her in fighting the charges of drug use, she actually went to the Madrid year end championships, apparently catching everyone by surprise..! November 1st 2007: Wow, some shocking news today, as Martina announced she was retiring but also said she was facing a positive drug test of cocaine from this year's Wimbledon. "I am frustrated and angry," the 27-year-old Hingis said at a news conference in Zurich, Switzerland, her voice breaking as she fought back tears. "I believe that I am absolutely, 100 percent innocent." She read a prepared statement ending with the vow, "I have never taken drugs," then left without taking questions. October 11th 2007: Martina announced she would not be playing in Zurich next week... “I’m very disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Zurich Open,” says Hingis, “and that I can’t play in front of my home crowd. I love the city and the tournament, both of which bring back so many good memories. I’ve done everything I can to be able to compete, but since Key Biscayne I’ve had problems with my hip, and they’re still stopping me from playing any more tournaments this year tournaments and even from practising properly. I’ve therefore decided that I’m going to take as much time as it needs to get fully fit again.” September 30th 2007: Martina pulled out of next week's event in Stuttgart because of an injury.. September 19th 2007: Unfortunately Martina Hingis suffered a 2 set loss in the China Open 2nd round, a 5-7, 1-6 loss. |
