Maria in Ace Tennis Magazine
----------------------------

There's a one-page interview (with a photo) on p.86 of the May 2006 issue of British tennis-magazine Ace, which someone has posted a scan of:

It's great to see Maria and Tatiana are {still/again} friends. I know the haters think that Maria kidnapped Tatiana and forced her at gunpoint to sit next to her as a publicity-stunt following their controversial Miami semi-final, but that theory doesn't convince me why they:
(a) looked at each other and smiled;
(b) sat with their shoulders touching;
(c) wore identical nail-varnish on their fingers and toes, and matching orange wristbands.

I like Tatiana very much too, and I love the matches that they play against each other (having attended their Birmingham 2004 & 2005 matches, and read about their Miami 2006 one - which I have just ordered from Tennis Videos International (http://www.users.bigpond.com/tennisvideos1/)).

-------
Ranking
-------

Maria went back up to #3 in the WTA singles-rankings this week, thanks to Justine Henin-Hardenne's failure to defend the Charleston title.

1. Amélie Mauresmo (3511 points)
2. Kim Clijsters (2941)
3. Maria Sharapova (2753)
4. Justine Henin-Hardenne (2693)

--------
Birthday
--------

Maria turned 19 on 19th April, so a slightly belated Happy Birthday to her.

Her record of never losing a professional singles-match to a player who is younger than herself is still intact, as is her place in the teenage subset of the WTA singles-rankings:

3. Maria Sharapova (19 years 0 months)
15. Nicole Vaidišová (16 years 11 months)
17. Ana Ivanovic (18 years 5 months)
18. Dinara Safina (19 years 11 months)
22. Maria Kirilenko (19 years 3 months)
26. Lucie Šafárová (19 years 2 months)
27. Tatiana Golovin (18 years 3 months)
34. Anna Chakvetadze (19 years 1 month)
36. Shahar Peer (18 years 11 months)
40. Sania Mirza (19 years 5 months)
47. Vera Dushevina (19 years 6 months)
...

It certainly does feel strange that Big Maria is younger than Little Maria! Big Maria looks much older than 19; Little Maria looks much younger (both in the nicest possible ways).
