March 10th 2008: Pete came oh so close, he ended up losing 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 to current world #1 Roger Federer... tough loss:( March 10th 2008: Pete is scheduled to be playing tonight at the Madison Square Garden in New York against world #1 Roger Federer, should be a great one..! March 2nd 2008: Read an interesting interview with Pete Sampras here:) February 19th 2008: Pete was in action in an exhibition match today and he was very impressive as he posted a 6-4, 6-2 win against Tommy Haas...well done:) February 10th 2008: Read an interesting article about how Pete is still playing tennis part time here:) November 24th 2007: Pete enjoyed a very nice win today, taking out Roger Federer with a 7-6, 6-4 win in their 3rd and final Asian exhibition in Macau. Sampras downplayed his victory, noting Federer was coming off a long season and he was helped by his big serve and the fast indoor carpet surface. His goal was to win one set during the three-match series. "Let's not get carried away," he said at a news conference. Sampras ruled out a comeback from retirement, telling the audience after the match, "I had my time in the 90s November 22nd 2007: Pete came a lot closer this time around in Malaysia, he lost 7-6, 7-6 against the world #1 Roger Federer... "I was impressed with Pete tonight," Federer told reporters. "He played some unbelievable shots, but then again he is capable of doing that. He had an incredible serve which was so difficult to read tonight." November 20th 2007: Pete was in action playing the first exhibition match against Roger Federer, he lost 6-4, 6-3, displayed his good serve but had more problems on baseline rallies...! October 27th 2007: Pete will be playing an exhibition on Sunday against fellow American Jim Courier...read about it here. September 15th 2007: Pete will be playing 3 exhibition matches at the end of the ATP season against world #1 Roger Federer, to be played in Seoul, Kuala Lumpur and Macau, they will even play another match in March in New York. May 26th 2007: Pete will be playing 3 exhibition matches in November in Malaysia as he will face world #1 Roger Federer. December 11th 2006: Read a nice interview with Pete done by the Australian newspaper The Age here. August 22nd 2003 : Sampras is scheduled to announce his retirement from professional tennis at the US Open... April 30th 2003 : Pete has withdrawn for another tournament, the Italian Open without providing an explanation to the press...Unfortunately, it is now nearly impossible for Sampras to play a clay court season this year.. April 9th 2003 : Sampras has given another hope of a return in 2003, by asking a Wild Card for the Wimbledon warmup tournament at Queen's Club. Since Wimbledon has always been a major tournament, if Pete intends to play any tournament this year, it should be the Championships..Many other top players have confirmed their entry to the tournament, including Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick and James Blake, so this should be a great warmup for the big tournament to come... February 27th 2003 : Pete has withdrawn from yet another tournement, the Franklin Templeton Classic in Scottsdale. He declared that he wasn't yet ready to play tennis at a sufficient level ; right now, he says he's practicing for the Indian Wells event in March, but it's hard to tell what will truly happen. His own brother, Gus, is unsure of where all this practice will lead, but at least he's confident that he has the potentiel to do great things when he gets back on the court.. January 5th 2003 : Sampras had intended to begin his 2003 season in San Jose, for the Siebel Open. Unfortunately, he announced today that despite significant progress, he was not yet ready to play at his highest level and he will have to withdraw from this tournament as well.. December 20th : Pete's coach, Paul Annacone, declared today he will resign his post as managing director of USA Tennis High Performance, and instead concentrate on Sampras full-time. This will have a major impact on Pete's 2003 career ; when Pete won the US Open in 2002, he gave a lot of credit to his coach for helping him to defeat old rival Andre Agassi and claim the title. No doubt Annacone will also help him when he attempts to defend his US Open title in 2003 ! |
