Rogers AT&T Cup (Friday August 9th)

By Pierre Cantin

Every year, when turning my calendar page from July to August, I always get the same image, the one of the tennis tournament in Montreal. In Canada, we have a unique situation where every year, WTA and ATP tournaments are switched from Montreal to Toronto and so on... This year, to my big pleasure, the women's tournament, the Rogers AT&T Cup will be played in Montreal! I was lucky enough to see a few tournaments already in 2002 but every time this one comes around, it feels a little special.. Why ? Many reasons! I guess having a big tournament like this near home is one of the reasons! But not only that, this tournament is really special.

Montreal is a great city with a lot of life and festivals during summer and when tennis time comes around, the population is ready! And people do come in big numbers! In every one of the last five years, the tournament has beaten the record for the biggest crowd in a one week event... Yes, it is beating its own record.. and once again, the organisors have announced they were on pace to set another record for the WTA tour events.... So yes, you figure out that the atmosphere is special... The stadium looks great and it's a lot of fun to go watch..

But is it also fun to go play the tournament ? Yes, of course players always say that they like the event and the city very much, bla bla bla, but that is in their job description, or almost.. But the one thing that makes us truly beleive it is that the players to actually act on their sayings.. The tournament has been named the best non grand slam tournament in a vote held by WTA players... Monica Seles made her long awaited in Montreal, and many many others things...

For all these reasons and many more, the Rogers AT&T Cup is a very special event and I look forward to seeing the tournament unfold.. I will do my best to post my impressions here every day!

Today, I had a brief apparition to see the draw be done... And Montreal trying to be special once again, they not only made it possible for fans to go see the draw being made but they went in downtown Montreal to get it done!:) You can see the full draw here by the way.
