MARIA SHARAPOVA REGAINS No.1 SONY ERICSSON WTA TOUR SINGLES RANKING

Russian superstar returns to top spot for first time in more than a year

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – Reigning US Open champion Maria Sharapova (RUS) officially regained the World No.1 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Singles Ranking on Monday, January 29, capping an incredible season in 2006 and an impressive start to 2007.

Sharapova, who enjoyed two stints at No.1 between August and October 2005, overtakes Justine Henin (BEL), who had held the top ranking since winning the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid last November. The 19-year-old Russian, a runner-up over the weekend at the Australian Open, earned enough points to move up to No.1 by reaching the fourth round in Melbourne.

"It's always an honor to be No.1 in the world," said Sharapova, who is spending her eighth career week at No.1. "Every kid dreams of being No.1 and I'm so happy I was able to get back to the top. It's a great achievement and I'm very happy."

"After her stunning triumph at the US Open and her courageous run to the finals in Melbourne, Maria has truly earned the No.1 spot," said Sony Ericsson WTA Tour CEO, Larry Scott. "Maria is an outstanding ambassador for women's tennis, and regaining the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour No.1 ranking is a wonderful achievement."

Former No.1 Amélie Mauresmo (FRA) and 2006 Roland Garros runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) also had outside chances of ranking No.1 after the Australian Open, but both women were upset in the fourth round.

Sharapova was virtually unbeatable on hardcourts in 2006, winning all five of her titles last year on that surface, including her second Grand Slam victory at the US Open.

Sharapova is the last player to clinch the No.1 ranking for the first time in her career, on August 22, 2005, becoming the fifth teenager to do so. Below is a list of all 15 players who have held the No.1 ranking in women's professional tennis; the chart below lists the first date the player ascended to the No.1 ranking, followed by her age on that monumental day and her total number of weeks at No.1 (listed in chronological order in terms of first ascent to No.1):
