ARANTXA SÁNCHEZ-VICARIO HONOURED AT SONY ERICSSON CHAMPIONSHIPS
Spanish tennis legend awarded with the Sony
Ericsson WTA Tour's Mentor Appreciation Award
MADRID, Spain –
Arantxa Sánchez-Vicario, former World No.1 and official ambassador of the Sony
Ericsson Championships was honoured on-court Thursday at the end of season
finale with the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Mentor Appreciation Award. The award, in
recognition of her work with the Tour's Partners for Success programme, was
presented to the Spanish legend by her protégé and former doubles partner, the
current World No.4,
Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour's Partners for
Success programme is the mentor programme of the Tour's Professional Development
Department. It pairs talented young players with a retired Tour player who has
demonstrated a commitment to excellence, integrity and leadership throughout her
career. Partners for Success is the first mentor programme in professional
sports.
Since 2002, Arantxa has voluntarily shared
her insights and knowledge of the women's Tour with former US Open champion,
Svetlana Kuznetsova. "Arantxa's
knowledge and advice has been invaluable for me in my development as a Top 10
player," said Svetlana. "To be able to learn from such a wonderful champion has
been a wonderful opportunity for me and I am delighted to be able to present
this award to her today."
"I am truly honored to have received this
recognition from the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and from Svetlana," said the 14
times Grand Slam champion. "I am a great believer in helping the next generation
of players and it has been a wonderful experience to help Svetlana in a small
way become the great champion she is now."
"Arantxa is one of the true
greats of the game," said Sony Ericsson WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott. "The Partners
for Success programme is an invaluable support system for our emerging players.
It's a programme designed to help the stars of tomorrow learn from the legends
of the game and is one that is reaping huge rewards for the players, for the
Tour and for our fans.”
