Sunday, July 31, 2005 DAVENPORT WITHDRAWS FROM THE ACURA CLASSIC San Diego, CA – World No.1 Lindsay Davenport has been forced to withdraw from this week’s Acura Classic.Davenport withdrew due to a low back strain she sustained during the final of Wimbledon, the longest ladies’ singles final in Wimbledon history. Davenport is a two-time champion of the Acura Classic, winning the title in 1998 and 2004. "Obviously I am extremely disappointed to have to withdraw from the Acura Classic. This is my favorite time of the year to play, especially being so close to my home. However, I have tried my hardest since Wimbledon to get my back better and be able to compete, but it still needs more time.” Davenport added, “I look forward to returning to La Costa in 2006 and trying to win the title again." Top seeds at the Acura Classic include defending US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, US Open finalist Elena Dementieva and former World No.1 Kim Clijsters.
