SHARAPOVA WITHDRAWS FROM OPEN GAZ DE FRANCE PARIS, France - No.2 seed Maria Sharapova (RUS) was forced to withdraw from the 13th Open Gaz de France on Wednesday due to an upper respiratory illness. Sharapova was scheduled to play her first match (second round, after a first round bye) on Thursday against 2004 Open Gaz de France semifinalist Tatiana Golovin (FRA).“I’m very disappointed I won’t be playing in Paris this year,” Sharapova said. “I’m not in my best condition and will not be able to perform at my best. I hope I can come back next year and play in front of the Parisian crowd.” Sharapova arrived in Paris on Monday afternoon from Tokyo, Japan after defeating world No.1 Lindsay Davenport 61 36 76(5) in the final of the Toray Pan Pacific Open. Tokyo [Pan Pacific] was Sharapova’s first Tier I victory and eighth career Sony Ericsson WTA Tour singles title. Prior to that she reached the Australian Open semifinals for the first time, falling to eventual Champion Serena Williams 26 75 86 after holding three match points. Sharapova’s spot in the main draw is filled by lucky loser Sanda Mamic (CRO). The world No.3 is next scheduled to play at the Qatar Total Open in Doha (week of February 21).
