RUSSIAN TENNIS STAR MARIA SHARAPOVA MAKES MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO VICTIMS OF RUSSIAN SCHOOL TRAGEDY Donation is equal to the value of a new Porsche Cayenne and will aid victims and families of September school massacre in Beslan, Russia; contribution follows her $10,000 donation to tsunami victims MELBOURNE, Australia – Tennis star Maria Sharapova donated the value of a Porsche Cayenne on Friday to the victims of the tragic school siege in Beslan, Russia in September. As the singles winner of the 2004 WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche in November, Sharapova of Russia was awarded a Porsche Cayenne S to be donated to a charity of her choice. Sharapova auctioned the luxury automobile and chose to donate the proceeds of US$56,300 to those affected by the Russian school hostage crisis in which more than 350 people were killed, including more than 150 school children.Sharapova, in Melbourne for the Australian Open, presented the donation to Leonid P. Moiseev, the Russian ambassador to Australia, in a ceremony outside the Crown Towers hotel that included representatives of Porsche Australia. Through its generosity and presenting sponsorship of the WTA Tour Championships, Porsche annually awards the singles winner of the prestigious tournament a new Porsche to be donated to a charity chosen by the player. “Making this donation was the least that I could do to help the innocent victims in my country who were tragically affected by th is senseless act,’’ Sharapova said. “I encourage everyone to do as much as they can to bring at least a little bit of comfort and support to these victims and their families who are still stricken with grief and sadness.’’ Earlier this month, Sharapova, 17, donated $10,000 to a relief fund for tsunami victims, joining several Tour players who have also made contributions on behalf of tsunami victims, including at the Australian Open where players collected donations from fans at the tournament. In December , she participated in a Florida exhibition match that raised money for victims of a recent series of hurricanes in Florida. “We applaud Maria’s efforts to support those who were affected by this terrible act in Russia, as well as her generosity toward the tsunami victims,’’ WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott said. “The WTA Tour and our players have a strong sense of community service and a willingness to get involved in efforts to help those who are less fortunate than we are.’’ Visit the Maria Sharapova page here
