Maria Sharapova Withdraws from Advanta Championships

Philadelphia, PA - USA – No.3 seed Maria Sharapova was forced to withdraw from her semifinal match on Saturday at the Advanta Championships presented by Motorola due to a right shoulder strain.

Sharapova was scheduled to play in the semifinals against No.1 seed Amelie Mauresmo in her first appearance at the Advanta Championships.

“I’m very disappointed I am not able to continue my play in Philadelphia. I was having a really good tournament and I’m sure it will still be an exciting final weekend.  I just wish I could be a part of it.”

Sharapova first sustained the injury at the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich two weeks ago. She re-aggravated the shoulder in her quarterfinal match against Alicia Molik on Friday in Philadelphia.

Sharapova has qualified for the season-ending WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche, which will be held November 10-15 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, California.

Mauresmo advances to the final of the Advanta Championships with a walkover and looks to defend her title, facing the winner of No.6 seed Vera Zvonareva and No.7 seed Nadia Petrova.
