Last tournament of the season

by Maria Nguyen

What a way for Daniela to end the season, a loss in the first rounds in a tournament! 9
The "Match of the Day" came from the #5 seed Daniela Hantuchova vs. Jelena Dokic. Daniela lead the head-to-head meetings 3-0, but Jelena leads the confident level, with a runners-up title from last week. If you just put aside your desire for Daniela to "kick-Jelena's-ass" you would agree that Daniela didn't have a heads up. Daniela hasn't been doing well this season at all - she had two breakpoints for 4-all in the first set but loss grip and fell apart, she wasn't even a threat to Jelena in the second set, loosing the match: 4-6, 1-6. To be quite honest, there is no surprise in this loss: Daniela is still digging her way out of her hole. There wasn't a way that Daniela could've won this match mentally, she was a wreck, and she didn't even pounce on the short balls by Jelena. Every chance she got, Jelena leaped on Daniela's frail 2nd serve or weak returns. Daniela will be glad that her vacation is starting earlier than the others, three months off for Daniela (and her fans).
