KremlinCup Russia,
Round 1
Anna Pistolesi def. Nadja Petrova 6-3 and 6-3

By Gerhard
Grundhammer
After Nadja hold her serve at the opening match of day 2 at
Moscow absolutely save and Pistolesi had to save 2 breakpoints in her first
service game, i was sure it will beome an easy win for Mrs. Petrova.
But things changed pretty quickly. Petrovas attacks have either been not
powerful or not precisioned enough to be unreachable for Pistolesi, whos match
plan for today must have sounded like: "I run for my life, return everything and
wait for mistakes". At least that was, what she did! And it worked!
No player could really take advantage from her serve, most balls turned out to
become really long ralleys, and also most balls were decided by either an
unforced error of Nadja, when she stayed on the baseline, or a pass shot against
her, when she was attacking the net.
Whatever Petrova tried, it worked out that Pistolesi scored one point more as
the russian. No matter if she tried to produce power from the baseline or attack
the net, it she tried to play rather save or to use ancles and spin. Anna just
run down and returned enough balls to never be in danger of loosing the match.
