Zvonareva helps Russia in the 5-0 win

Vera's Preview for the Rogers AT&T Cup

After a long rest since her Fed Cup match in Slovenia Vera's first tournament is the Rogers Cup. Here Zvanareva should have a relatively good run as a number 10 seed, even with the prospect of meeting with the World No15 (8th seed) Jelena Dokic in the 3rd Round. But about that, later.

In her first round match Vera's opponent would be No.54 Barbara Schett, who should not be a problem considering the gap in the rank and Zvonareva's long rest. The second round promises to be even easier with a qualifier or a Canadian Wild Card (No.143) Pelletier being the possible opponents. The third round might be a tough one: possibly Gargliardi or Dokic. Yet, this is not a problem. Dokic isn't in her best times now, sliding down the rankings and being often upset. In a clear perspective Gagliardi should be the one to play Vera. She is very dangerous, producing an upset every now and then, despite her No.60 ranking. Hopefuly Vera will dispose her too.

But, and it is a big but, Zvonareva might meet Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals. Her cpmpatriot has played realy well the last couple of weeks, reaching two quarterfinals and there is nothing to prevent us from thinking that it will not repeat. Hantuchova might be in Svetlana's place, but it is highly unlikely for a number of reasons. So the most probable oppoent is Svetlana and there is no quarantee that Vera would be able to outplay her. This will easily be the match to await and watch out for, both for Vera's ar Kuznetsova's fans. What makes matters worse for Vera is that she did not play well in the last month or so. She lost many of her World Team Tennis matches, although she did win her last game, which took place in the Fed Cup. But, that was against not against a highly ranked player, nor against a riser.

If Vera does overcome Sveta, then winning a semifinal encounter would be close to a miracle. There is a giant possibility of meeting Kim Cleisters in the semis, who is one step away from becoming the world No.1. It would be easy to predict the otcome of that match.

There is not much use of writing who's next in the chart, but hopes of the fans are always high, so for their sake I will write that Justine Henin-Hardeen is the most likely opponent in the finals.

Resume: Vera should reach at least the quarterfinals with straight set wins over any foes. Quarterfinal will be a tough 3 seter.

Good luck Vera!
