CHANDA RUBIN WITHDRAWS FROM JPMORGAN CHASE OPEN LOS ANGELES, Calif. (5 August 2003) – Defending champion Chanda Rubin has withdrawn from the JPMorgan Chase Open because of right shoulder tendonitis. No. 3 seed Rubin, who was scheduled to play her opening match at the JPMorgan Chase Open on Wednesday, developed pain in her shoulder while practicing Tuesday. She was examined immediately and after consulting with her doctor, has been advised to rest the shoulder. “I was advised by the doctor not to play to prevent further injury and avoid surgery,” Rubin said. “I was ready to play, but unfortunately, I have to take some time to recover.” Lucky loser Angelique Widjaja has replaced Rubin in the JPMorgan Chase Open singles draw and will play Italy’s Rita Grande. “Of course I’m really disappointed that I can’t play, especially because I am defending,” Rubin added.
