Lina Review
Acura Classic - San Diego Stadium Court - 7pm Lindsay Davenport V Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-0 7-6(2) This years Acura Classic is now over for Lina after a disappointing match against the American Lindsay Davenport. Following two impressive performances in her previous matches Lina and her fans were looking optimistically towards this match in the hope of an upset, in the end though it would prove to be a step too far. Stadium Court was expectant, would the underdog from Russia turn on the style to upset the favourite? The only explaination for the first 15mintes of Lina's game must come down to nerves, tension and inexperience. She could not have gotten off to a worse start losing every service game and not even threatening her opponents serve. Davenport was immense - making all of her shots and serving impecably, even the Williams sisters would have done well to keep in touch with Lindsay on this sort of form. In total Lina won just 5 points throughout the whole first set, the crowd could probably not believe was what unfolding infront of their eyes After 14minutes of what can only have been torture for Lina, the first set was played out and taken 6-0 by Davenport. Perhaps the fact that she had lost the first set so heavily affected Lina, it appeared to change her mindset for the 2nd set, its something only she can answer but when she walked out for the beginning of the next set - something had changed. The nerves seemed to have vanished and her shot making was starting to trouble the American, she began to fight for each point and started to settle into the match. Davenport broke Lina to make the score 3-1 but Lina's new found confidence enabled her to bounce straight back and break the Davenport serve, eventually Lina found herself in the lead at 4-3, was the comeback on? With both players holding serve all the way to 6-6 the tie-break would ultimately decide the outcome of this match. Unfortunately the momentum swung back to Davenport, maybe the nerves returned for Lina or maybe Linsday upped her game knowing what was at stake, whatever the reason the tie-break went to the American. Lina took the 1st point but lost the next 6 in a row, giving Lindsay the opportunity to win the set and match 6-0 7-6(2). Looking back over this tournament Lina should be pleased with her progress, since her last competitive matches were at Wimbledon reaching the 3round here was a good sign for the rest of her hardcourt season. With her improving form and impressive results this week Lina can look forward to her next tournament - The JP Morgan Chase Los Angeles.
