Lina Review

Acura Classic - San Diego

Court 11 - 10am

Lina Krasnoroutskaya V Saori Obata

6-4  6-3

Lina's run up to the US Open got off to a smooth start today, beating the Japanese Left hander Saori Obata 6-4 6-3.

After the withdrawal of Alexandra Stevenson (Lina's original opponent) due to injury this match against Obata was considered to offer an easier opportunity to progress to the 2nd round, the match and result though proved you cannot underestimate any player on the tour.

In what was an up and down match with many breaks of serve it was touch and go at one point as to whether which player would triumph on court 11, in the end though the power and guile of Krasnoroutskaya overcame the Tokyo born Saori Obata.

Lina got off to a flying start in the first set breaking Obata's serve in the first game of the match, followed up with the holding of her own serve - the perfect start to the match. Breaking of serves though was to be the story of the match. As soon as the Russian raced into the 2-0 lead Obata broke and held serve to level at 2-2, the match it seemed would be decided on mental strength. After some long rallies and a large amount of break points the critical moment arrived. At 4-4 Obata lost her serve and left Lina with the opportunity to serve for the 1st set. The opportunity was taken, keeping her head Lina held her serve and took the set 6-4.

The second set was almost a mirror image of the first, in fact it started in identically, Lina broke straight away and took a 2-0 lead before Obata regained her composure to break back to level at 2-2.

It was clear that the set could go either way but as with the first set Lina pulled through, made her shots and upped the level of her game just when she needed it. At 4-3 the all important break was achieved by Krasnoroutskaya leaving her with the task of serving out for the match.

In a tense final game Lina raced to 40-15 giving her 2 match points but the Japanese player dug in and clawed her way to deuce, Lina could not afford to lose her serve at this point. Fortunately though she won the last 2points of the game in style and wrapped up the second set and the match 6-4 6-3.

This good performance from Lina today sets up the prospect of a 2nd round clash with the Italian Silvia Farina Elia. If she can play the way her undoubted talent suggests then victory in this match is a distinct possibility.

Well Done Lina
