Zvonareva helps Russia in the 5-0 win
Zvonareva aided in her country’s 5-0 win over Slovenia yesterday, although the result of Vera’s encounter with MajaMatevzic was not vital for the team’s win. At first, Vera was not scheduled to play any singles, only doubles, as the Russian Captain Tarpischev was afraid that she, as a less experienced player, would lose her match. But, when Russia had a 2-0 lead over Slovenia he decided to let Zvonareva play. As a result, Vera posed a 6-1 6-2 win over Matevzic, showing that she did deserve to play in the singles. But, her doubles match, where she was to partner Elena Bovina was cancelled. Vera took only 71 minutes to seal her victory over the Slovenian. It would be wrong to say that Zvonareva played her best tennis during the match, but she did not make much mistakes either. On the other hand, Matevzic did not play very well, perhaps because it was of no use in the “dead rubber”, but she was not great in her previous encounter either… Zvonareva had to play hard only in the second set, especially in the last few games, when Maja forced many deuces. The end of the match came after the Russian finally took advantage of her 3rd match point Visit the Vera Zvonareva page here
