Match Review: Nadja Petrova def.
Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 4-6 and 6-3.

By Gerhard
Grundhammer
It was raining at Paris, until just before the match started and both players
faced the difficulties of finding no try courts to warm up, and as the 18 year
old russian super-talent Vera Zvonareve hit her first serve at noon, nobody
expected that only 6 (six!) minutes later, set one was basically decided.....
Petrova was moving well, hitting well, all her powerful driving shots found
their target, she used every slightest mistake of her opponent to attack her and
Zvonareva found herself 3-0 down, broken
at love, twice! Then Vera decided NOT to take a rest like Petrova, but playing a
few balls over the net instead and her game went better.
She forced Nadja to deuces in game 4, finally hold at the fifth game for 1-4 and
showed her fighting abilities for the first time today, but when Nadja hold for
5-1 Vera gave the first set away and had to commit her third and last "break at
love", today.
Set two finally showed, what everyone expected: Nadja dominating the match with
her powerful and attacking game, Vera running down the baseline and returning
every possible and a few impossible shots. Unfortunately Nadja lost that one
4-6.
Set three started rather strange. 6 breaks in a row, and it was Nadja who was
able to hold her serve first, for a 4-3 lead. The match broke the 100 minutes
barrier as a completely exhausted Zvonareva, who was still running up and down
the baseline for her life, had to use deuces again to hold her serve for the
first time in the decisive set, but Petrova managed to get a break point. Veras
first serve was in but Nadja took the advantage and after the ball was played
more than 20 times over the net, it became clear that this was the decisive
point of the entire match! Finally the ball went over the net fifty (!!!) times,
before Nadja scored a fantastic winner, and stood on the court, raising one fist
to the air, pointing with the other hand to her heart, and waving one of her
georgeous smiles towards her coach, Glen Schaap.
Holding next, to finish her opponent off, was easy. Zvonareva was demolished,
frustrated and exhausted, and even though she changed her tactics now, and
started attacking the net in the final game of the match, Nadja hold savely to
proceed to the semifinal where she will now face Kim Clijsters.
