Match Preview: Berlin Round 3 By Naomi C Kim Clijsters (1) vs Fabiola Zuluaga (Q) Kim Clijsters- Round 1: BYE Round 2: Def Loit 6-4 6-2 Fabiola Zuluaga- Round 1: Def Suarez 6-3 6-1 Round 2: Def Shaughnessy 3-6 6-4 6-1 Head To Head = 2:0 Last time Kim met Fabiola Zuluaga it was in another tier 1 event, Kim won that match and then went onto capture her first tier 1 title in Indian Wells earlier this year. However, Berlin is on a very distinctly different surface and as a result Zuluaga will be a much tougher opponent. Zuluaga upset the 14th seed Meghannn Shaughnessy, who has been having a fantastic year in the previous round and last week and in the first round upset last years French Open champion Paola Suarez easily 6-3 6-1, and made the quarter finals in Warsaw after upsetting the world number 9 Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets in the first round there. Kim will therefore have to significantly improve her level from her previous match if she is to hold any chance against this tough Columbian Clay court player. Zuluaga is currently ranked 52 however prior to a debilitating shoulder injury which forced her out of action for many months, the Columbian sat just outside the top 30 at number 34. Zuluaga holds four career titles all of which came on clay, showing that Zuluaga is as much at home on clay as Kim is indoors. Kim
will have to lift her level from her first match, her service will need to
improve or else Zuluaga will take advantage. Kim will also have to move better
and scramble every ball back. This will be a tough one for Kim, so don’t be
surprised to see if it goes all the way.. Visit the Kim Clijsters page here
