Hantuchova vs. Zuluaga

Head to Head: Hantuchova leads 1-0

To tell the truth, Daniela’s recent play hasn’t been that impressive.  Earlier this year she got to a career high ranking at number 5.  But, since then she has slipped to number 9.  She has had tough matches against little known players.  We can only hope that this recent slump is only temporarily.

Daniela is playing in Warsaw this week at the J & S Cup.  She is the number 3 seed behind Venus Williams and Amelie Mauresmo.  Her second round opponent will be Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia.  Zuluaga got past wild card Sakowica in the 1^st round 6-3, 6-2.  Daniela has only played Zuluaga once in the past, and it was at the Australian Open earlier this year.  Daniela won in a very tight match, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

Zuluaga is a veteran who has been around since 1994.  She has won 4 WTA titles and has been ranked as high as 31 back in 2000.  But, she has never been past the third round of a Grand Slam.

I didn’t think Zuluaga should be that big of a problem for Daniela, but that first match they played proved me wrong.  Daniela needs to get her big forehand going and keep the unforced errors down.  If she plays well, she will get through this match without major trouble.

Prediction: Hantuchova defeats Zuluaga: 6-4, 7-5.
