Tournament Preview

Family Circle Cup, Charleston

Well, after two decent performances, Maria has reached the first round proper in Charleston, adn will now be looking to pull a result or two for a much needed boost in the rankings and in confidence. On Saturday, she defeated Akiko Morigami, and yesterday, she over came Julia Vakulenko in straight sets 7-5 6-4. So, two good performances over players ranked higher than her in the rankings has earned her a spot in the first round, so she will pick up at least one point.

She has however, been drawn against a tough opponent, in the form of world number 51 Maja Matevzic. Maria will however be on someghing of a high, and although i say it every week, a result is not beyond her. Matevzic has played in 5 tournaments since the start of the year, and has never reached further than the first round, only recording 3 wins all year. The draws she has received however have not been kind, as she faced second seed Hantuchova in Paris in round two, and top seed Venus Williams in Antwerp. That being the case, it is likely that she will look at this darw as a kind one, and that may well be where Maria's best hope lies. If a degree of comlacency kicks into Matevzic's game, then Maria could well pull off a victory and a welcome boost to her ranking points.

From there, she will go on to a big match, with Jelena Dokic. The match should be a good one. Dokic has enjoyed a recent return to decent form, after a stuttering start, and the prospect of a match with Dokic brings great anticipation as two of tennisrulz biggest names go head to head!!!! But as much as it pains me to say so, i think Dokic will have too much. She will be high on confidence from her recent form, having finally found her game. However, that said, the doubts will still remain, and if Maria can hold the first few games, then those doubts might make the match a little more interesting.

Round 1: Maria def Matevzic in three
Round 2: Dokic def Maria in straights
Round 3: Dokic def Dementieva in straights
Quarters: S. Williams def Dokic in three
Semis: Davenport def S.Willaims in three
Final: Davenport def Henin in three
