Well this week hasnt
been the week for me and predictions. Fresh off the 'success' of my
recommendation for a Marlene Weingarner victory at Midland, only to find that
she wasnt included in the main draw, came the result last night that Maria lost
her first round match to Shenay Perry in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
However, the
circumstances it seems were against her. Speaking to the tournament site,
www.midlandtennis.com, Maria's father Youri told reporters that she had been
suffering from a flu bug, so her performance was certain to be effected...
"We made the decision an hour before the match that she would play. "She's been
sick for a few days and it made her weak. She said yesterday if she didn't feel
better she wouldn't play, but she was feeling better."
So the first round defeat was a shock, but now Maria has a month to recover.
Sources suggest that she will receive a wild card to the tier One tournament at
Indian Wells, which starts on the 3rd of March. The truth in such a story is yet
to be revealed, with wild cards being announced the week before the event
starts. So by the 28th of February, we should know if she will make an
appearance, and it will be here on the site, as will any other updates on Maria
in the meantime.
