Midland Preview

February 1st 2003

by Matt Donaldson

Despite Maria's early exit in Melbourne, her performances there were more than encouraging for the season ahead as she attempts to progress and develop to a quality player. That progression will continue this week as Maria plays in the Dow Corning Women's Challenger on the USTA pro circuit. The draw isnt made until the 4th Feb, awaiting the qualifying rounds to be completed, but Maria can gather hope that her performances of late have been above that of her current WTA ranking of 156.

With no draw available it is difficult to make any suggestions as to Maria's potential progress. That said, it is being played on arguably her best surface, hardcourt, and Maria is certainly capable of beating the most of the field should she perform well throughout the week.

Not one of the top five seeds made it past round 1 in any of last weeks tournaments, either Tokyo or Fullerton (another USTA event). Going back to the Australian Open, there is one 'famous' name set to appear. Marlene Weingartner was responsible for the early exit of one Jennifer Capriati, as she went on to the 3rd round before losing to Virginia Ruano Pascual. It was Weingartner that progressed furthest of those appearing at the Midland Community Tennis Center at Melbourne, others reaching round 2 (Ansley Cargill), and others acheiving varied success between first round qualifying exits to first round proper departures.

The informed money would be on a Weingartner success. Just as Maria, she too had a good Australian Open, and before Melbourne reached the quarter-finals at Canberra, a tier V eventually won by Meghannn Shaughnessy. Of course without a draw to view this is just a vague prediction, so come back for the draw on Tuesday and read about Maria's potential route.
