"THE DOOMSDAY CLOCK"

20/1/2003

By Brandon Carr

Many people would be aware of the doomsday clock, for those that are not it is a metaphorical clock used by scientists to where the earth is regarding its own self destruction. Midnight is the end

11.45PM: Young Junior, Martina Hingis, takes all before her, winning under 18 tournaments at 12

11.47PM: Hingis makes her professional debut

11.49PM: Normal time attrition takes place, as Hingis captures Grand slam titles and takes over the number 1 in the world

11.50PM: The power girls arrive on the scene making Martina’s job harder

11.52pm: Normal Time and attrition takes place as Hingis turns 20

11.54PM: Devastating injury at Filderstadt threatens Martina’s career

11.53pm: Successful return to Sydney and Grand slam final appearance turns back the clock.

11.55PM: Hingis puts career on hold in May 2002 to undergo further ankle surgery

11.54PM: Early then expected return bodes well for Hingis

11.56PM: Disastrous results upon return force Hingis to end 2002 season early

11.57PM: Hingis withdraws from Sydney, Melbourne and Tokyo

11.58PM: Hingis announces she may never return, is very happy away from Tennis and training causes to much ankle pain. Melanie Molitor, Martina’s mother takes over the coaching of Miriam Casanova

11.59PM: Martina’s doctor announces that Martina’s injuries are fine and it is up to her if she wants to put in the “grit” to return to top level tennis.

As you can see, the clock can move forward or back, depending on Martina’s actions. Martina sits perilously at 1 minute to midnight. Her next action could very well be to click the clock over to the point of no return
