Maria in Melbourne
Having won two matches already, Maria faces the final round of qualifying for a place in the first round proper of the Australian Open. Her two victories have led to a match with Alena Vaskova of the Czech Republic, who is ranked 35 places ahead of her. Vaskova has comes through her two matches with relative ease, and like Maria has not yet dropped a set. However, both these victories came over players ranked well below her standing of 154, with Janet Lee ranked at 216, and her first round opponent Sophie Ferguson ranked at 1149. Maria may have taken a bit more time than Vaskova, but her victories came against players who were both ranked above her, Voracova at 122and Goloviznina at 152. Both victories will have done wonders for Maria's confidence, and she will go into tomorrows match knowing thta she has put out two players ranked higher than her final opponent. At the risk of tempting fate, im going to go for Maria to be playing in the first round proper come this weekend based on her confidence from this week and her performances in Hong Kong, and from there, who knows! The draw today threw up some interesting ties for qualifiers, with possible matches against 8th seed Anastasia Myskina or 10th seed Chanda Rubin. Alternatively, there is one match with two qualifiers playing. Either way the site will keep up to date so watch out for tomorrows result.
