Patty Cakewalks in week 42

By Todd Spiker

*TENNISRULZ.COM WTA REPORT*

    PATTY-CAKEWALKS IN WEEK 42
by Todd Spiker

So much for that Clijsters/Hantuchova stranglehold on singles titles until the Williams family returns.
As it turned out, the spreading around of the hardware continued in Week 42 with two more woman gaining their first singles titles of 2002 as Patty Schnyder won the Tier I in Zurich (it was hardly a "cakewalk," but how could I resist that headline?) and Maja Matevzic took her first-ever crown with a victory in Bratislava (and a doubles title for good measure).
The WTA season is winding down, but there are still loads of things to watch.  With three weeks to go, a new Fed Cup champion will be crowned, there's a fierce battle underway for the #4-11 rankings, Jennifer Capriati is looking for a victory...any victory, Daniela Hantuchova is looking for a Top 5 ranking, the Waffles are trading positions on the computer, Jelena Dokic is trying to put a stop to her tired late-year side which will only end after her 29TH tournament of the season, Lindsay Davenport is looking for her first 2002 title after winning at least one every year from 1993-01...and then, of course, there's always the Russians.*

*--see below for a surprise

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Patty Schnyder
...the OTHER Swiss Miss has advanced to just two finals this season, but she made the most of them by making them both Tier I's.  In Charleston in April, she put together a string of victories over Mauresmo, Pierce, Serena and Capriati before running out of gas against Iva Majoli in the Final.  In Zurich, playing her best tennis since last spring, she put together another impressive string of wins, this time over Hantuchova, Martinez and then Davenport in the Final.  Suddenly, Schnyder's ranked #13 and might just sneak into position for a berth in the WTA Championships two weeks from now.

RISER: Maja Matevzic
...the 22-year old advanced to her first career singles final in Bratislava, ran roughshod over Iveta Benesova, then went out and took the doubles title, too.

SURPRISE: Lubomira Kurhajkova
...Coming into Bratislava ranked #114 and not even included in the players list on the official WTA website, the Slovenia native knocked off Iroda Tulyaganova and Tatiana Poutchek on her way to the QF.

VETERAN: Conchita Martinez
...Conchita's late 2002 comeback continued with a 1r win over Jennifer Capriati and a trip to the Zurich SF, her best Tier I result since a SF in Rome in May 2001.

NEW FACE: Iveta Benesova
...the 19-year Czech made her mark in the Fed Cup in April with the surprise opening-match upset over Iva Majoli that provided the difference in a 3-2 victory over Croatia.  After reaching her first career final in Bratislava, following wins over Muller, Granville and Dechy, her ranking jumped from #98 to #74.

DOWN: Jennifer Capriati & Chanda Rubin
...JC's lackluster post-Oz year is turning downright ugly down the stretch, this time with a 2r loss (and ankle injury) in Zurich; while Rubin, with less fanfare, is still looking for the lost form that helped her defeat Serena Williams and got her in position to nearly upset Venus at the US Open.

    MATCHES

1.Zurich Final - Schnyder d. Davenport
...Davenport, in eight tournaments, has reached the final four times this season.  She's 0-4.  Guess she's not ALL the way back, huh?  Schnyder's Zurich run doesn't match her Mauresmo-Pierce-Serena-Capriati blitz in Charleston, but the Bovina-Hantuchova-Martinez-Davenport
streak at least got her her first title of 2002.

2.Zurich 2r - Alexandra Stevenson d. Jelena Dokic
...Stevenson finally wins a knockdown, drag out match with a 7-5 3rd set win to drop Dokic to 1-5 in her last six matches.  Stevenson's up to #22, and the Top 20 is a realistic goal for the season.

3.Zurich 2r - C.Martinez d. Capriati
...Capriati is still looking for a post-US Open victory.  And now she has an ankle injury.

4.Bratislava Final - Matevzic d. Benesova
...both advanced to their first singles final.  Matevzic wanted more, winning, 6-0,6-1.

5.Zurich 2r - Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian d. Anastasia Myskina
...Mikaelian's recent results are on a consistent upswing.  Myskina has hit another bad patch.

HM-Zurich 1r - Ashley Harkleroad d. Patricia Wartusch
...a flash of the potential. 6-0,6-0.
